CALL FOR PAPERS
(1st Announcement)
The First International Seminar of HABITechno 2013 on
INNOVATION IN HOUSING AND HUMAN SETTLEMENT TECHNOLOGY
Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia, 11 November 2013
http://habitechno.info
School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development Institut Teknologi
Bandung (ITB) will hold the 1st International Seminar of HABITechno with the
theme of: “Innovation in Housing and Human Settlement Technology”.
This inaugural seminar will focus on innovations in the concepts and
solutions of contemporary technologies for the development of housing and
human settlements, particularly for the low-income in the developing world.
Discourse related to housing and settlements development for the masses,
especially the low-income, is always important considering the increasing
growth of the urban masses in the world, of whom many of them in
developing countries are the low-income people. Between the 1970s and
1990s, participation of the people in housing and human settlement
became the central issue of this discourse. Government and the non-
government organizations, along with local communities, attempted
to apply this paradigm shift in the development of housing and human
settlements from “top-down” to the “bottom-up” approach. Universities
and academia were also involved in these related actions, including in
conducting various the then-popularly-labeled “participatory-researches”
or “participatory action-researches” related to the development of low-
income urban housing and settlements. Eventually, many experiences
and related knowledge – even theories – have been gained from these decades.
The world has changed ever since and so have the challenges as well as
problems in the development of housing and human settlements. The rapid
rate of urbanization in the present era has brought challenges for the
developing world to provide housing in an increasing rate, affordable to
the target population, and in a quality that can sustain, at least, a decent life.
In current decades, the information era and the democratization processes
in many countries of the world have also given challenges in housing
provision and settlement development because of rapid changes in
the socio-cultural conditions of the people to be housed. These conditions
have changed people’s needs, preferences, responses, and perceptions
or views towards their housing and living environment.
Also becomes challenge of the present era is the “man-made” and natural
disasters that are more prone to become a threat to human beings because
of rapid population growth. Disasters have occurred because of competition
amongst people to find space for their settlements and competition
between people and nature for the development of settlements and
the related man-made activities upon the natural environment to cater
the ever increasing population growth. Most of disasters affect low-income
people in developing countries because of weaknesses in the technology
and regulations for their mitigation.
The various challenges stated above need to be faced and positively
responded toward more sustainable development of housing and human
settlements. HABITechno seminar will become part of these responses and
will address topics related to housing and settlement for the low-income
people, focusing oninnovations in the concepts, solutions, and technical
aspects related to the technologies in housing and human settlements development.
With the above background, HABITechno seminar will have following
objectives:
- To discuss and gather knowledge on the technological innovations
that can respond to the contemporary challenges in the development
of housing and human settlement development in the developing
world that ranges from “hard technologies” (e.g., appropriate building
technology) to “soft technologies” (e.g., institutional aspects)
for a more sustainable housing and human settlement development,
especially in relation to the context of developing world. - Since HABITechno seminar will be held regularly, not too long in the
future it is planned that through this seminar a network between
academicians and practitioners can be established to develop
knowledge on the technological innovations in housing and human
settlement development and to implement their application.
HABITechno seminar invites academic communities, from universities and
other research institutions as well as from various disciplines, to present
papers on innovations related to the response to challenges stated above
in the development of housing and human settlement based on academic
research and to share knowledge with others. This seminar is open to
participants from various disciplines since innovation can be related to
various aspects of housing and human settlement development; from
planning to design aspects, in the management aspects, from engineering
aspects to social aspects, from economic/financial views to institutional views.
