BOOK ORDERING: ARCHITECTURE PRESERVATION AND HISTORICAL ENVIRONMENTS

Indonesia has a distinctive tradition of building and architectural vocabulary. This wealth can be observed in the quality of historic buildings and environments, whether in the form of local cultural heritage, Western culture or the result of a combination of the two. However, this wealth is threatened by the pace of modernization, and is expected to be lost if nothing is taken. Efforts to protect the preservation of buildings and the environment have been established through Law no.11/2010 concerning Cultural Conservation. Even though there is an explanation of the Cultural Conservation Area, the preparation and determination of the Cultural Conservation Area has not been carried out with consideration of the concept of authenticity (authenticity) and integrity (integrity). This gap occurs due to the absence of local references and understanding of the two concepts, which are unique to the Indonesian context. This problem is the background for the publication of a textbook entitled Preservation of Historic Architecture and Environment. Understanding the substance of the Cultural Heritage Area, the preservation approach and the method of evaluating historic areas as Cultural Conservation based on the concept of authenticity and integrity and the need to open new perspectives on the discussion of preservation and the built environment are discussed in this textbook. This understanding was then discussed through the four cities selected as case studies, namely the City of Sawahlunto, the Old City of Semarang, the City of Lasem and the Old City of Jakarta. At a practical level, this understanding can be used as a reference for environmental management.
